When We Hide the Truth: Is It Love or Fear?

What if what we call “honesty” in a relationship is actually just fear of losing the other person?

I’ve noticed that in relationships, sometimes one person tells the truth in a way that makes it easier for their partner to accept. Sometimes they avoid it. Sometimes they simply keep it to themselves.

The explanation we give ourselves is: “I don’t want to hurt them.”

But underneath it, there may be something deeper: “I don’t want to hurt myself.”

And that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. On the contrary, we can communicate painful things with care and sensitivity, so that there are no secrets or hidden parts between us.

The problem begins when, over time, we start to distort our own perception of what is actually happening.

Self-deception and hiding reality from ourselves are not helpful to anyone. Sooner or later, the deeply guarded truth comes to light.

But by then, it may no longer be painless.

Is it love to hide or alter the truth in order to reduce — or, more often, simply postpone — the pain?

Is it love to take away the other person’s right to know what is really happening and make their own choice?

Yes, their reaction may be intense and frightening.

Yes, they may make a choice we don’t like.

But the alternative is manipulation and control — driven by the ego that says:

“It will be the way I want it to be.”

And yet, the way we communicate is one of the most important things in any relationship.

Because the line between truth and cruelty can be very thin.

There is something deeply liberating about sharing with the person beside us what we have been keeping inside. To sit down together, talk about it, and see where we can go from there.

But how do we do that?

If the questions in this article resonate with you, but you’re not sure how they relate to your own relationship or where to begin, we can explore that together.

I offer a 20-minute online Discovery Session, where we can look at your current situation, what you are struggling with, and what kind of support might be most appropriate for you.
