The Newest Challenge to Meaningful Relationships

There is a new phenomenon I have been observing in the way people communicate with one another. I believe it will become increasingly noticeable.

More and more people are communicating with artificial intelligence. I understand why. There are many benefits and conveniences. As a work tool, it can be an incredibly useful assistant.

The problem begins when AI is used as a consultant, a friend, or a therapist.

Yes, I know. It feels good because it never gets offended, it is always available, it speaks in a supportive and positive tone, it has no personal life, and it remembers everything. You can talk to it however you want, for as long as you want, whenever you want. It even encourages you to keep going by ending its responses with questions and suggestions for continuing the conversation.

It may seem as though there is nothing wrong with that.

And yet, I am observing that the distinction between artificial intelligence and a real human being on the other side is becoming increasingly blurred.

People begin to treat other people as if they were algorithms — without respecting their boundaries, personal space, emotions, feelings, or the simple fact that there is a real, living human being on the other side, just like them.

And artificial intelligence is not even intelligence.

It is an algorithm. Zeros and ones.

It has no body. It has never lived a human life. It has never cried or laughed, been held or held someone else, gone to school, studied at university. It does not think, despite the way it may say it does. It does not understand you, even though it communicates as if it does. And it does not feel, even though it may tell you that it does.

It has no soul.

Yes, sometimes it seems to reflect you with remarkable accuracy. Sometimes it can even make you cry. It has a sense-of-humour setting, too, and perhaps sometimes it makes you laugh.

But that is because you are human — not because it is.

Over time, it can make you lose the boundary between a human being and an algorithm. It can become harder to communicate in person and to connect with real people. You may gradually lose your sense of others — and even your own sense of humanity. You may become more isolated and develop a dependency.

And that may be the least of what can happen.

We are only beginning to see the potential consequences for the human psyche.

This phenomenon can be resisted.

Perhaps not for all of humanity. But everything starts with you.

Here are a few things you can do before opening a chat:

  • Ask yourself: “Do I really need AI for this, or could I figure it out, write it, or find the answer myself?”

  • Think about which real, living person you could share your questions or emotions with.

  • Turn to a qualified professional in the relevant field.

  • Read a book or an article written by a human being.

  • Leave the chat when it prompts you with another question or suggestion to keep the conversation going.

I know this takes more time.

Experts and friends are not available at every hour of the day. And some of them may react emotionally to what you share.

But that is real human life.

Real communication. Authentic presence. Real connection.

Sometimes it can hurt. Sometimes it can be uncomfortable. Sometimes another person may disappoint you or challenge you.

But perhaps that is precisely what reminds us that we are human.

And that we can live a full life - with all the emotions and feelings we are capable of experiencing.

If you can tell AI everything, but you cannot tell a human being — what is happening to your relationships?
